VIDEO: What’s Paul Frampton up to? Why does he think future for luxury is video?

After a 20 year stint at Havas Media, Paul Frampton kept his cards close to his chest about his next role and surprised a few people when he landed as CEO of Tink Labs, the Hong Kong-based startup.

According to Bloomberg, Tink Labs is on-track to become Hong Kong’s first $1bn tech unicorn. But what is it and why are investors and analysts licking their lips with excitement?

Imagine landing in a far-flung city, let’s say Hong Kong, after a red eye flight. You want to check in with your loved ones at home and remind them to put the bins out but switching on your data will cost a King’s Ransom. You left your copy of The Lonely Planet in the departure lounge and have no idea what to see or do. You’d like to bring back some nice designer gear from your eastern adventure but don’t know where to flex the plastic.

You arrive in your room and notice a shiny android device next to the bed. It’s free to use and will take care of everything. You can use it as your hotel key (one less thing to look after). Second wind kicking in, you can binge on room service from the touch of your hand. There’s even a handy marketplace to connect guests with restaurants, bars, boutiques and tourist attractions.

High end hotels pay for the devices. Guests get convenience - there’s even a native m-commerce platform allowing hotel guests to transact and buy everything from a ticket to the London Eye to a souvenir for the kids back home. Advertisers and brands have a unique platform to distribute ad-funded content, video and offers.

Video, luxury brands and well-heeled people who don’t know their way around town is a recipe for success in the booming $1.2 trillion travel and tourism industry.

We caught up with Paul at Tink Labs’ bustling UK HQ in Soho to find out how luxury brands are using video to create more emotive and powerful storytelling as part of Video: The Marketing Director’s Cut, a video series in partnership with Brightcove.
