I believe what people need to do to advance their careers is become a little bit of a pain in the backside. And I mean that in the most absolutely sincere way, because I think marketing in particular has become too deferential, too reactive, too downstream. I’d like to see the ‘awkward squad’ reappearing in marketing. People who say stuff like “If you look at the problem from a psychological point of view or customer perspective, there is a much easier solution… you hadn’t thought of that, had you?”
